Canberra Natural Attractions

There are so many ways to enjoy Canberra, Australia's national capital that you could spend your whole holiday exploring the natural wonders of the region.

Located close to the Snowy Mountains, Canberra also boasts many parks, botanic gardens, lakes and forests. The city also provides many and varied ways to enjoy these natural attractions.

Grab a map from the Visitors' Centre and check out the self-drive tracks where you can take in rivers, heritage trails, old restored homesteads, lookouts in Canberra and historical aboriginal landmarks.

Visit Brindabella National Park, which can only be accessed by four-wheel drive vehicles and marvel at the beauty of this protected land. Being surrounded by mountains, you'll find plenty of lookouts from which to view the region at its best, including Black Mountain.

Animal and land protection is of vital importance in the Australian Capital Territory and the National Aquarium and Wildlife Sanctuary is more evidence of that. Visitors to the sanctuary will give the family a fun-filled day with the animals, and a bit of education about the important research the sanctuary does. For a day with more exotic animals, check out the National Zoo, or the Australian Reptile Centre at Gold Creek.

And for other more adventurous way to see this scenic part of Australia, look into sightseeing tours on bikes, horseback and rafting. Take a fishing adventure to see the area from the water, while you relax and pull in the trout and cod. Or see Canberra from a helicopter or hot air balloon. It's all there for you to enjoy.
